A watch at this level is not an heirloom, and nobody should sell it to you as one. What it can be is a neat, honest watch that keeps the right time, sits properly on your wrist and survives daily wear. Watches on our site sit roughly in the Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 band, so this guide is about spending that money well.
What this budget honestly buys you
Almost everything in this band runs on a quartz movement. A small battery drives it, there is nothing to wind, and it keeps time well enough that you will not notice any drift from week to week. On a budget watch, the cheap part and the accurate part are the same part.
The case will be alloy or steel, usually plated to give it its colour, and the glass will almost always be mineral glass. Mineral glass shrugs off the light scuffs that plastic would hold on to, though a hard knock against a door frame can still chip it.
Know what you are not getting, too: no self-winding mechanism, no sapphire crystal, no screw-down crown, no real depth rating, and a strap that will age faster than the movement. That is not a bad buy, just a watch you wear for a few years rather than hand down. In the watches collection, read the dial shape and strap type listed on each page rather than the adjectives.
Dial shape and your wrist
Shape matters most here, and it is the one thing a photograph tells you honestly. We carry square, cushion, tonneau, rectangular, octagon and round dials, and they wear very differently on the same arm. The simple test is the lugs, the little horns that hold the strap: they should sit inside the edges of your wrist, not hang over them.
| Dial shape | How it wears | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Neutral, reads smaller than it measures | Any wrist; safest first watch |
| Square | Flat and formal | Slim to medium |
| Rectangular | Long and narrow, dressy under a cuff | Slim |
| Cushion | A square with soft corners, chunky | Medium to broad |
| Tonneau | Barrel shaped, curves with the arm | Broad |
| Octagon | Angular and sporty | Medium to broad |
On a slim wrist a rectangular or square dial on a narrow strap looks deliberate, while a wide cushion case looks borrowed. On a broad wrist a small round dial gets lost, and the width of a tonneau or an octagon earns its place. Measure the flat top of your wrist with a tailor's tape and compare it with the case and strap sizes on the product page.
Strap or bracelet, and getting the fit right
Leather is lighter, quieter under a sweater sleeve and softer in cold weather, and costs little to replace once it goes limp. Its enemy is sweat: a leather strap worn through a Karachi summer stiffens long before the movement gives up. A steel bracelet is cooler, does not mind a splash and looks dressier, but it is heavier and will tug at arm hair until the fit is right.
Fixing that is cheap. A bracelet is shortened by pushing out the small pins between the links, and any watch shop will take out a link or two in a few minutes for a few rupees; keep the removed links in the box. Aim for a bracelet that slides a little but does not fall over the wrist bone when your arm hangs down, and with leather buy so the buckle sits on the middle hole, because new leather stretches.
Water, battery and the first week
Water resistance, told straight
A watch in this band handles a splash: rain on the way home, washing your hands, a wet pavement. A shower, a pool or a bucket of hot water is another matter, and so is wudu with the strap soaked through: water sits around the crown and under a leather strap long after your hands are dry. Never turn the crown with wet hands, and wipe the case and strap dry rather than leaving them to air.
The battery
A quartz cell usually runs a year or two of normal wear. When it stops, you are not throwing the watch away: any watch counter or mobile repair shop will fit a new cell for a very small amount while you wait.
What to check in the first week
- Set it against your phone, then look again after three or four days. A quartz watch that is minutes out in a week has something wrong with it.
- Pull the crown out and turn it both ways. It should click into position and move the hands cleanly, without grinding.
- Wear it a full day, then look at your wrist. A buckle that leaves a deep mark or a bracelet that pinches means the fit is wrong.
Orders are dispatched within 1 to 2 working days and delivery usually takes 3 to 6 working days, with a 7-day replacement if the item arrives damaged or incorrect. Do these checks in the first few days, not the first month.
Choosing one as a gift
When you cannot measure the wrist, buy the forgiving option. A steel bracelet is the safer gift, because links come out afterwards at any watch shop, while a leather strap only fits the holes it was punched with. Stay with a round or softly rectangular dial in a medium size, and match the metal to what the person already wears: gold tone for someone in gold rings and bangles, silver tone for everyone else.
If you would rather not gamble, the best sellers are a short list and a sensible place to start when buying for somebody else's taste. A watch also slots into a bigger present: a shirt or a hoodie from men's clothing with the watch on top covers a birthday without much agonising.
Frequently asked questions
Is a quartz watch worse than an automatic one?
It is different rather than worse. Quartz keeps better time than most automatics and asks nothing of you except a cell every year or two. An automatic gives you the mechanical charm and the sweeping second hand, and costs several times more for the same look.
Can I keep it on for wudu or in the shower?
For wudu, only if you are wetting your hands and arms quickly and you dry the watch afterwards. Take it off if the strap is going to soak, and take it off for a shower, a swim or hot washing-up water. Leather holds water against your skin and the case back, and that is what shortens its life.
Will the plating wear off?
On a plated case it can, usually at the lugs and bracelet edges after a year or two of daily wear. Keep perfume and sprays off the case, and take the watch off for heavy work. If you would rather not think about it, choose a plain steel finish.
